The Story So Far…
It’s been another busy year for Gatehouse Awards – and as it’s the start of the new Academic year 2019/2020 – we thought it’d be nice to reflect upon some of this year’s developments, our centres and partners’ successes!
This year saw the official launch of our ESOL Cadets English language qualifications for young learners. The GA-approved International Exam Centre in Turkey was the first to deliver these unique examinations and since, then the ESOL Cadets examinations also debuted at the International HIPPO English Language Olympiad. So far, over 350 candidates have received their certificates. Overall, there has been an overwhelming and enthusiastic response to the Cadets qualifications from centres and candidates alike – we’re currently putting together the final touches towards new versions of the ESOL Cadets examinations and looking forward to launching these examinations later this year. HIPPO English Language Olympiad
In 2019, GA became the official sponsor of the Hippo “English Without Borders” Olympiad, an international competition which promotes English language teaching and learning to children all over the world. More than 30, 000 candidates from 35 countries took part in the competition in 2019. We attended the Hippo Final – alongside 150 school finalists, their teachers and parents – in Venice, Italy in May this year and we’re looking forward to the 8th International English language Olympiad 2020, which is now open to students and schools worldwide.
If you’d like more information about how your school can take part in the Hippo Olympiad, please don’t hesitate to contact us or visit the Hippo website – www.hippo-competition.org. The preliminary rounds will be getting underway in the next few months, so don’t miss out!
In other news, we are extremely proud to have been accepted as an official sponsor for the 7th ALTE International Conference taking place in Madrid 2020 – where we are looking forward to presenting our examinations and meeting new friends.
As always it has been a very busy time for our ESOL International Classic Examinations! Our IESOL examinations are being accepted by universities, governments and employers both in the UK and abroad; these examinations not only improve people’s lives, but empower and enable students and professionals to access higher education and enter new careers in sectors such as the military, emergency services, hospitality, teaching, public services and transport sector.
Behind the scenes we have been working on expanding the number of universities who currently accept our Classic IESOL examinations – some of the most recent ones include:
The University of Edinburgh (a Russell Group university), Brunel University, the University of Wolverhampton, Southampton Solent University and Kingston University, London in the UK and the prestigious Università di Verona, Italy, in Europe.
We’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that as of 1st September 2019 candidates will no longer be permitted to use dictionaries in any of the IESOL examination components. We have introduced this change to address the concerns presented by some of the universities who are considering accepting Gatehouse Awards Classic IESOL qualifications as evidence of prospective students’ language proficiency. The sample materials have been fully updated with this information and are now available on GA website.

TEFL – Teaching English as a Foreign Language
On another note, our TEFL connections have grown considerably far and wide with new partners launching across the Balkans, Uzbekistan and Mongolia– as some of you are aware our TEFL qualification is in partnership with the UK’s longest established TEFL provider, i-to-i.
For those who’re unaware, TEFL is an internationally recognised as a key qualification for those wishing to pursue a teaching career abroad.

The GA TIE examinations are increasingly popular with our European centres, who are working hard to provide these examinations to those learners who prefer a more self-directed and creative learning approach and experience.
Over 5000 candidates registered for TIE examinations in 2018-19.

Finally, it’s been really great to welcome new friends, partners and centres from around the world as well as seeing our current partners and centres grow from strength to strength.
We have had so many highlights so far this year and many exciting new projects currently in development in preparation for 2020, including new endorsed courses in partnership with hair guru Jawed Habib of JH Wellness and EPP Global, London and new regulated qualifications in a range of subject areas.
